sharing my love of books with you

Good morning! It’s been too long since I wrote a Saturday morning post. For those of you who follow me, I promise I haven’t fallen off the face of the earth. I am still working on creating posts – I have new words and a few quotes I want to share with you. Along with preparing a Sunday School lesson for tomorrow, laundry, shopping, and cooking, today is going to be a busy day!

But first, I want to show you my desk. It’s my quiet haven for reading my Bible and writing.

A sweet couple in my church gave me this secretary desk. I was overjoyed because I had always wanted one because my Grandma had one that I adored. The upper portion is a glassed-in China cabinet where I keep an assortment of fine China teacups and saucers, sugar bowls and creamers, a small thimble collection, and several Very Old Books. My favorite Very Old Book was a gift from my grandfather to my mother to me: Flower Fables, by Louisa May Alcott. I think it might be a special book; I’ll tell you why in a few minutes.

Flower Fables is a collection of fairy and flower stories. I remember in particular a story about a fairy who visited a girl at night and took her on an adventure, flying through the air. Sadly, it’s been years since I read it, and I don’t remember it very well. It think it’s due time to reread Flower Fables.

These are pictures of my copy. The cover is so sweet, with a picture of a group of young ladies collecting flowers or maybe going for a picnic. The inscription page says, “To Iona Dattisman from her teacher Miss McCarthy for Highest Average 1908”. I wish my handwriting was like Miss McCarthy’s.

Now for why I think this book is special: There was a printing/binding error resulting in a repeated section of pages and subsequently a missing set of pages. One of the stories is cut off at the end, and the next one doesn’t have a beginning because of this error. Occasionally, I do a tiny bit of research on rare books, but it’s hard to determine if this is a printing flaw that makes the book valuable or just different. So while it’s in my possession, I like to call it Special.

Speaking of special, Hattie joined me at my desk for a few minutes. Look at that cute little face! Oh, and that’s the thimble collection that I keep on top of Flower Fables. It matches the aura of the book I think.

And that is how it goes when I’m writing at my desk. I have great goals, I get started, and then I go down rabbit holes like rare books, thimbles, and Hattie. Just call me Alice…

Happy reading!
